Visa interviews
Visa interviews are held from Monday to Friday for those arriving
at the Consulate of their jurisdiction, during the regular interviewing
hours. Please check the Contact Information and Working Hours page to find
out the appropriate address and working hours. Every person that wishes
to apply for a visa and who does not fit in the waiver of interview criteria
must schedule an appointment through the Visa Information Service.Applicants
will be instructed on how to make the R$38 payment, which includes ten minutes
or more of phone time valid for one or more phone calls. The fee includes
access to visa information both on the web and through the operators at
the Visa Information Service call center, and the courier expenses for returning
passports with approved visas.
Required documents
Every visa applicant must bring:
a filled-out the visa application form DS-156, and a DS-157 form for those
above 16 years old (both available free of charge, at the Embassy, Consulates
or at this webpage);
a valid passport showing at least six months validity from the date of
travel;
a 5x5cm (or 5x7cm) photograph with light background, taken within the
last six months (see details);
payment receipt of the visa application fee of US$100 (to be paid in
Reais). This fee can only be paid at an authorized Citibank branch.
Note: The Citibank clerk issuing the Visa Application Fee receipt will
write the visa applicant's name and passport number on the receipt. Receipts
without the applicant's name and passport number written on them will
not be accepted.
Student visa applicants or those participating in exchange programs must
present a valid I-20 or DS-2019 form completed and signed, visa application
forms DS-156, DS-157, and DS-158 (also obtained in the Embassy/Consulates
or at this webpage) and proof of financial ability to pay education and
lodging costs. Students who plan to study in a public high school in the
United States in F-1 status (with an I-20 form) must present additional
documentation before a visa can be issued.
According to the Immigration and Naturalization Law, each visa applicant
must show to the consular officer that he/she has strong ties to their
country of residence, and must show that they intend to depart the U.S.
after their temporary visit. For that, they can present proof of their
strong ties to Brazil (e.g.: labor card, income tax return, pay stubs,
marriage/birth certificates, bank statements, car documents, school statements,
etc.).
Work visa applicants must also bring the work visa petition (approved
by the INS - Immigration and Naturalization Services in the U.S.), and
the supporting documents that lead to the approval of the work petition.
Domestic employees/babysitters accompanying their employers must bring,
besides the regular required documentation, a contract of employment signed
by both the employer and the employee (example), one in English and one
in Portuguese. If the visa is approved, the applicant will have to pay
a fee of US$60, for the B-1 visa. This fee can be paid directly at the
Consulate, in either U.S. dollars or real, in cash or by credit card.
