| Padre Island National Seashore :- Padre Island National Seashore, encompassing 130,434 acres, is the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world, and offers a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as recreation. Click on the Special Events link (at the right) for the latest update on sea turtle hatchling releases. Yarborough Pass is open as of March 8, 2005. User fees at Bird Island Basin have been temporarily waived because of ongoing construction. See the March 2, 2005 article in the News section of this website. ACCESSIBILITY The Malaquite Beach Visitor Center is fully accessible. There are graded ramps to the exhibit area as well as accessible restroom facilities. Two wheelchairs, specially designed for use in the soft sand of the beach, are available free of charge. An elevator is available for access to the main observation deck.
