America's most tragic conflict ignited at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, when a chain reaction of social, economic and political events exploded into civil war. At the heart of these events was the issue of states rights versus federal authority flowing over the underlying issue of slavery. ACCESSIBILITY Accessibility at Fort Sumter has been dramatically improved with three elevators providing service to the museum, viewing area and Eastern sales outlet. In late 2004, a new ramping system should be installed at the Liberty Square Visitor Education Center and departure facility in Charleston. This new ramp will make ferry access very easy for all visitors including those in power operated wheel chairs. Currently, it is best to depart from the Liberty Square facility at or near low tide. Non-battery operated wheel chairs may be lifted onto the ferry to navigate the few steps to reach the boat deck. The Patriots Point departure facility is not accessible.
