| Fort Frederica National Monument :- In the early 18th century, the land lying between British South Carolina and Spanish Florida was known as the debatable land. This land (which we call Georgia today) was the epicenter of a centuries-old imperial conflict between Spain and Britain. Fort Frederica was established in 1736 by James Oglethorpe to protect the southern boundary of his new colony of Georgia. Colonists from England, Scotland, and the Germanic states came to Frederica to support this endeavor. ACCESSIBILITY Accessible parking spaces, wheelchair ramps, and accessible restrooms are provided. A wheelchair is available. The townsite has soft grass with no walkway and may not be suitable for wheelchairs. An NPS golf cart is available on request for those needing assistance to visit the town site and fort. For kids GAMES AND TOYS: The Museum Store sells a variety of authentic colonial children's toys and games, including cup & ball, fox & goose, marbles, and jacks. BOOKS: Two books written from a child's perspective are available in the Museum Store. "Bloody Summer of 1742" tells the story of a young boy's adventures during the critical summer of 1742, while "Phoebe's Diary" interprets the events through a young girl's eyes. Both are written by award winning author Joyce Blackburn. |
