Everglades National Park

  Everglades National Park :-

Spanning the southern tip of the Florida peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades National Park is the only subtropical preserve in North America. It contains both temperate and tropical plant communities, including sawgrass prairies, mangrove and cypress swamps, pinelands, and hardwood hammocks, as well as marine and estuarine environments. The park is known for its rich bird life, particularly large wading birds, such as the roseate spoonbill, wood stork, great blue heron and a variety of egrets. It is also the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side. Everglades National Park has been designated a World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere Reserve, and a Wetland of International Importance.

ACCESSIBILITY
The park's visitor centers, most interpretive trails, some of the Flamingo boat tours, and the Shark Valley tram tours are wheelchair accessible (Call ahead to make arrangements for the tram and boat tours.). Wheelchairs are available for loan on a first come, first served basis at the Royal Palm, Flamingo, and Shark Valley visitor centers. Audio programs and captioned movies are available at Ernest Coe and Gulf Coast visitor centers. Many wonders may be seen from a car window, but the Everglades reveals its greatest treasures to those who get out into it. Many of the park's trails are paved or wooden boardwalks.

Anhinga Trail - At Royal Palm Visitor Center. This is possibly the best place in the park to look for alligators, birds, and other wildlife. A narrated audio tape is available for loan. Paved with a wooden boardwalk.

Gumbo-Limbo Trail - Also at Royal Palm. This is a hardwood hammock trail illustrating the tropical forest trees reminiscent of Central America. Paved.

Pinelands Trail - An often missed but truly fascinating trail through the original "fire forests" of Florida. Watch for holes along the sides! Paved, though often narrow and uneven.

FOR KIDS
During the winter months, there are ranger-led walks, talks, campfire programs, and bike hikes for the entire family, along with special programs just for kids.
