| Chaco Culture National Historical Park :- Traveler Advisory Beginning September 6, 2005, the park will begin a project to re-surface all park roads and parking areas The project is expected to last 3 weeks. During that time, visitors may experience: One-way traffic flow. Short delays to drive to and from the Chacoan sites. Slightly longer hikes to Chacoan sites. Temporary closure of one Chacoan site for a 2-3 day duration. Ranger talks throughout the day at Pueblo Bonito. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. Chaco is remarkable for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings, and its distinctive architecture. To construct the buildings, along with the associated Chacoan roads, ramps, dams, and mounds, required a great deal of well organized and skillful planning, designing, resource gathering, and construction. The Chacoan people combined pre-planned architectural designs, astronomical alignments, geometry, landscaping, and engineering to create an ancient urban center of spectacular public architecture - one that still amazes and inspires us a thousand years later. ACCESSIBILITY An access guide is available at the Visitor Center desk. There is one accessible camp site. Accessible restrooms can be found in the campground, at the visitor center, and at Pueblo Bonito/Chetro Ketl and Casa Rinconada parking lots. Portions of some trails (Pueblo Bonito, Chetro Ketl, Pueblo del Arroyo, and Casa Rinconada) are accessible with assistance. ACTIVITIES Your first stop should be the Visitor Center, which includes a museum, information desk, theater, book store, and gift shop. Picnic tables and shade shelters are located by the parking lot. From there, the 9-mile paved loop road accesses five major Chacoan sites. Self-guiding trails are available at each site. Trail guides are available at the parking lots of the sites, or in the bookstore. Each site usually takes 45 minutes to one hour to complete.
