Welcome to the Biscayne National Park Travel Planner. Here you'll find
everything you need to plan your vacation, including directions, maps, photos,
lodging, camping, things to do, weather, and more. Biscayne is the largest
marine park in the National Park System, with more than 95% of its 172,924
acres covered by water. The park encompasses four distinct ecosystems: coral
reefs, the northern islands of the Florida Keys, Biscayne Bay, and mangrove
shorelines. The world's third-longest coral reef tract begins in Biscayne
National Park and is home to more than 200 species of fish and countless
other marine plants and animals. It is one of the best-preserved reefs in
Florida. I hope you'll enjoy a visit to Biscayne National Park in the near
future.
Munson said the park's fragile coastline, which is slated for wetlands restoration,
is being developed for housing and, further inland, quarrying operations.
These and other types of development would impede the restoration of the
fresh water flows into Biscayne Bay necessary for restoring the park's estuary.
The park's seagrass beds, which provide essential habitat for many sea creatures,
are being torn up by irresponsible motor boat use.
Set aside for protection in 1968, Biscayne National Park is the largest
marine park in the National Park System. Of its 173,000 acres, 95 percent
are covered by water. A dazzling array of fish species and seagrass are
part of the park's natural splendor, which also interprets a rich cultural
heritage spanning 10,000 years. Biscayne is currently undergoing a joint
fisheries management plan-the first of its kind by a national park? involving
a partnership between the Park Service and the state of Florida.
