The Alagnak Wild River twists and turns across 67 miles of pristine wilderness in the Aleutian Range of southwestern Alaska. The braided river begins at Kukaklek Lake in the Katmai National Preserve and then flows west, widening along the way, before spilling out into Bristol Bay. In 1980, the Alagnak was included in the national Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Whitewater rafters are drawn to the river's Class I-III rapids and ever-changing landscape, ranging from boreal forest to wet sedge tundra. The Alagnak's western stretch, shallow and marked by numerous sandbars, has become a favored destination for fly fishing. The cool waters of the Alagnak teem with rainbow trout and all five species of Pacific salmon, including the prodigious king salmon, the largest of which can exceed 70 pounds. The Alagnak's designation as a Wild River helps protect the area's abundant wildlife, most notably a large population of brown bears that feed on the salmon. Other wildlife found along the river include bald eagles, caribou, moose, osprey, and wolverines. The Alagank Wild River is accessible only by boat or seaplane. If you make the trip, be sure to bring heavy-duty rain gear and warm wool clothing.

Alagnak Wild River is located in the beautiful Aleutian Range. The river provides unparalleled opportunities to experience the wilderness of the Alaska Peninsula. The Alagnak River flows from Kukaklek Lake in Katmai National Preserve and offers 69 miles of outstanding white-water floating. The river is also noted for abundant wildlife and sport fishing for five species of salmon. Portions of the main stem lie outside and westward of Katmai.
