The Immigration and Nationality Act provides two nonimmigrant visa categories for persons wishing to study in the United States. The "F" visa is for academic studies, and the "M" visa is for nonacademic or vocational studies.

U.S. immigration regulations do not permit F or M student visa applicants to receive a student visa more than 90 days before their program starts if they are beginning a new course of study. Applicants who are renewing F student visas may obtain their visa more than 90 days in advance of renewing their studies.

The business visa (B1 visa) is available for anyone wishing to go to the United States temporarily to engage in commercial transactions, negotiate contracts, conduct litigation, consult with business associates, participate in scientific, educational, professional or business conventions, conferences, or seminars, etc. It is U.S. government policy to facilitate and promote international travel and the free movement of people of all nationalities to the United States, as well as to promote trade and commerce between nations.

Business visa applicants who need to travel earlier that their scheduled interview appointment time, may request an earlier appointment date and time by sending a fax at 021-212-36-07 or e-mail at programare@state.gov. If they are unable to contact the Consulate by these methods, they may call 021-252-4762 Monday though Friday between 15:00-17:00. However, requests for earlier dates will only be accepted in case of severe emergency and not just an inconvenience to the travel plans of the traveler.

Consular officers endeavor to expedite applications for business visas, so long as the issuance of the visa is consistent with the requirements of the applicable laws and regulations. In most cases, a qualified applicant for a business visa will receive a combination B1/B2 (business and tourism) visa.

Family-Based
Preference relatives may receive all of the visas not used by Immediate Relatives, but no less than 226,000 visas per year. Family-based preference categories (with minimum limits in parentheses) include:

F1 - Family First Preference: Unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens, and children if any. (23,400)
F2 - Family Second Preference: Spouses, children, and unmarried sons and daughters of lawful permanent resident aliens. (114,200)
F3 - Family Third Preference: Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens, and their spouses and children. (23,400)
F4 - Family Fourth Preference: Brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens, and their spouses and children, provided the U.S. citizens are over 20. (65,000)
