Visa Information

Types of Visas

Tourist, Business
1) You need a business visa (B1) if you are a national of a non-VWPP country or if you wish to stay more than 90 days for business purposes (for all VWP country nationals). The B1 does not allow you to accept employment in the US, but you can negotiate contracts, meet clients, assist/participate in seminars, visit expositions, and take customer orders.

2) You need a tourist visa (B2) if you are a national of a non-VWPP country or if you wish to stay more than 90 days for tourism purposes (for all VWP country nationals).

3)If you enter with a private jet or boat, or if you travel with a one way ticket.

Family:
Spouses and children (under 21 years old) of H, L, O and P (not Q) visa holders are eligible to accompany the principal applicant as long as he/she demonstrates the means to support his/her family while in the US. Couples must be legally married to qualify for such derivative visas, as the status of "concubinage" is not recognized by US immigration law.
When the spouse of a work visa holder does not apply for his/her visa at the same time as the principal applicant, he/she will need to submit the original I-197 form (if the Principal Applicant visa was not issued by the Embassy Paris) and proof of marriage. The spouse will have to submit an application with the basic documentation (DS-156, photos, passport, mandat, etc.)

Student, Exchange Visitor
1) If your primary purpose is academic study, you need an "F" visa. Applicants must demonstrate the financial capacity to cover tuition fees and living expenses for the first twelve months. (Full-time students may seek on-campus employment not to exceed 20 hours per week.)

2) According to the law, Foreign students are not allowed to attend Public secondary school in F-1 student status unless they reimburse the school authority for an amount equal to the school's per capita cost of education.

Au pair
The US Immigration Service (INS) defines an au pair as anyone going to live with a family residing in the US to provide services such as baby-sitting, housekeeping, cooking or language instruction in exchange for room and board or salary.
